The University of California – Berkeley won the American Society of Civil Engineers’ 22nd Annual National Concrete Canoe Championships last weekend in Tuscaloosa, Alabama.

The Cal Berkeley team, with its 20 foot-long, 230-pound boat dubbed Bear Area, topped Ecole de Technologie Superieure of Canada and Golden State rivals California Polytechnic – San Luis Obispo, which finished second and third, respectively.

Defending champions University of Nevada – Reno finished fifth.

The competition tested teams of college engineering students by judging a technical design paper, a formal oral presentation, and each team’s end products –a racing canoe and project display, as well as with a set of canoe races in the concrete vessels.

There’s an interesting web site collecting all sorts of concrete canoe information HERE.

Next year’s National Concrete Canoe Competition will take place in San Luis Obispo, California from June 17-19.
