Paddlers Celebrate Thompson’s 200th

19 May

Teams of paddlers are commemorating the 200th anniversary of David Thompson’s exploration of western Canada by retracing the 19th Century explorer’s route in 25-foot-long north canoes. The teams have been on the trail for a week in what they intend to be a 63-day, 2,200 mile trip.

Dubbed the Thompson Brigade, the reenactors plan to paddle through three provinces and four watersheds to retrace the route of Thompson’s return trip from Rocky Mountain House, in what is now Alberta, to Thunder Bay in present-day Ontario.

British Columbia’s Invermere Valley Echo recently ran THIS feature story on the commemoration. You can find additional information on the Thompson Brigade HERE.

More information about the man dubbed “greatest land geographer who ever lived,” can be found, HERE, at the official Thompson Bicentennial web site.
