Quetico Bans Organic Bait, Barbs in 2008

18 Dec

Unless you’re planning to drag your fishing tackle into Western Ontario’s premier wilderness park by sled, you might want to file thisĀ item away until springtime.

In any case, starting on January 1, 2008, anglers in Quetico Provincial Park will no longer be allowed to use organic baits or barbed hooks in the park. Organic baits include live or dead leeches, minnows, fish, or worms.

“We are concerned about the spread of disease and invasive species including things in the water being used to transport the bait,” Quetico Superintendent Robin Reilly told Canoeing.com.

Reilly noted that anglers will still be able to possess barbed hooks in the park, although they won’t be allowed to use them. Barbed hooks can be pinched to conform to the new regulation.
