Paddling Nebraska’s Niobrara River

31 Oct

We nearly missed THIS fine story in the New York Times about Nebraska’s Niobrara River.

Writer Helen Olsson took to the river earlier in the fall and reports on a unique area with a charming river flowing through it. The spring-fed Niobrara flows through six separate ecosystems, including tallgrass prairie, ponderosa pine, and eastern deciduous forests.

“The rapids are mostly riffles, and the water is knee-deep in most spots, inviting a journey that’s more about socializing than sport,” Olsson reports.

For 76-miles of its length, the Niobrara is designated a National Scenic River. The National Park Service web-site for the river, HERE, says, “You’ll be pleasantly surprised to see pine-clad hills and prairie, numerous waterfalls, tall sandstone cliffs and wildlife like deer, bison, elk, beaver, mink, herons and kingfishers.”
