Paddlers to Raise Ottawa River Awareness

5 Dec

Next summer, a canoe brigade is scheduled to paddle to the length of Ontario’s Ottawa River to raise awareness for a waterway that is now on-track to earn Canadian Heritage River designation, the Pembroke, Ontario Daily Observer reports, HERE,

Three 21-foot canoes — the Kichi Sibi, L’Outaoais and the Ottawa — which bear the names for the river in Algonquin, French, and English will descend the river to raise awareness of the waterway.

In May, Minister of the Environment John Baird endorsed the nomination of the Ottawa River as a Canadian Heritage River.  The river is now being considered for full designation in the Canadian Heritage Rivers System. The area recommended for designation includes the entire section of the river bordering the Province of Ontario — from the head of Lake Timiskaming to East Hawkesbury.

You can raise your own awareness about the Ottawa River, HERE, on the Ottawa River Heritage Designation Committee web-site.
