Paddler to Circle Lake Huron

Inspired by Michigan paddling legend Verlen Kruger, Stephen Brede is in the midst of a canoe trip he hopes will take him all the way around Lake Huron.

The 58-year-old Petoskey, Micigan resident, who began his trip on June 2 at the foot of the Mackinac Bridge in Mackinaw City, Michigan recently reached Port Austin atop the state’s “thumb.”  The Huron Daily Tribune caught up with him there and wrote THIS feature.

Brede noted that one of the trips Kruger, a paddler famed for his epic expeditions, hoped to one day do was a circumnavigation of the Great Lakes.  Kruger, who died in 2004, never accomplished the feat.  On his trip about Huron, though, Brede is paddling a Kruger-designed “Sea Wind” canoe which features fore and aft decks and a pedal controlled rudder.

You can follow Brede’s progress, HERE, on his Great Lakes Canoe web-site.
