Organization Provides Canoes for Students

26 May

Here’s one from our “Hat’s Off Department:”

We recently learned about a program that northern Wisconsin’s Friends of St. Croix Headwaters has organized which seeks to provide educational canoeing opportunities to local students. It seemed like just the sort of thing deserving a vitual pat on the back.

The program called Canoes on Wheels provides free use of canoes and paddling equipment to school and youth groups that want access to area waters. It’s the goal of the program to allow every graduating high school student in the program’s region to have at least one opportunity for an adult-supervised paddling experience on local rivers and lakes.

The Friends of the St. Croix Headwaters hope the program will provide positive, educational outdoor experiences for what will be the next generation of public stewards. The program also offers advice for educators who wish to integrate ecology and physical education-based outdoor activities into school curricula. The program also offers educator workshops on a no-charge basis.
