New York City: Paddling Destination?

28 Mar

If you made a back-of-an-envelope list of premier North American paddling destinations, we’re guessing New York City wouldn’t exactly top the list.

But now, with the launch by the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation of a 28 landing canoe and kayak “Water Trail” around the five boroughs of New York City, you might just want to consider the Big Apple as a non-traditional paddling destination.

“The shorelines of New York City offer tremendous paddling opportunities for both the beginner and advanced to explore by canoe and kayak,” Queens borough Commissioner Dorothy Lewandowski said in THIS media release. “Just as Greenways continue to make connections between neighborhoods and parklands, this Water Trail will continue to create new opportunities for persons to explore our natural environment.”

A map showing the various landings is available HERE.

As THIS AP story notes, many of the launches have been quietly used by NYC paddlers for years.
