Michigan Racing Season Underway

Michiganders take their canoe-racing seriously.
If you have any doubts about the hardiness of racers from the state where Verlen Kruger made his home and which annually hosts the 120-mile AuSable Canoe Marathon, look no further than the results, HERE, of Sunday’s 14th Annual Klondike Canoe Race.
The event — held in temperatures that huddled near the freezing point and with 10-15 mile per hour winds buffeting the racers — opened the Michigan Canoe Racing Association’s 2009 season. Nonetheless, 36 two-person teams along with a dozen solo paddlers raced the up and back course on Van Etten Creek near Oscoda.
Lee Barnett, 28, and Ryan Halstead, 21, won the race in 40 minutes, one second. Halstead finished third at last year’s AuSable Canoe Marathon, teamed then with his brother Rodney.
